The dining room here is as intriguing as the name of the restaurant. The walls are lined with crazy paving sandstone wallpaper and the ceiling is a show of planets and stars: “We’ve got a starry sky and a cave for you,†boasts Caveman 1961’s Facebook post from last year. This place also has some of the best fried chicken you will find in Melbourne. The caveman, it seems, is the owner and chef, Ronald Yabes, who proudly says, “My food tells the story of my life.†Enormously proud of his Korean heritage, Yabes is kept busy in his kitchen frying up chicken, rolling kimchi pancakes, frying dumplings and rice cakes. The restaurant is always heaving with Korean cuisine loving fans and the floors staff deftly manage the tables with generosity, calm and ease. It is well worth setting up camp at this caveman’s cave for the best kind of Korean food.
